Fighting Chance

Many years ago I was a single woman looking for a new car. I did not know how to negotiate for a good deal and was afraid to go to the dealer showroom. Then I found a website, www.fightingchance.com that changed my perspective. Using their process, I successfully negotiated for the car I wanted for the price I could afford. Dealers competed for my business and extended unbelievable offers. When I picked up my car, I was overjoyed to find it parked next to the showroom. I signed the paperwork which was ready when I arrived and drove away. No hassle. What power!

Would you like a fighting chance to create a positive working relationship with a difficult boss, an augumentative co-worker or a demanding client? In their book, Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement Without Giving In, Roger Fisher and William Uryan give a few suggestions for moving from contest to collaboration:

  • Use respectful language
  • Listen to their argument (not just hearing the words)
  • Acknowledge the legitimacy of their opinion (not necessarily agreeing)
  • Be flexible

Look at how you are communicating. Even if you do not always get what you want, you will feel more comfortable and confident knowing that you are focused on resolving issues, not fighting with personalities. You have a fighting chance!
